Telescope Directors Chair

In the event that you are comfortable calling the shots in matters related to interior design, might I audition the Telescope Directors Chair.

Their resume: The Telescope company got its start manufacturing wood cots and campstools in New York City in 1903. For the last 100 years, they have been producing an entire range of furniture in their 1-million square foot factory in Granville New York.

For decades now, their notoriety has been tied to their infinitely classic and devilishly handsome directors chair, which comes in two heights: dining height and counter top height, and two finishes: clear varnish and walnut stain. To best understand the longevity of the style, I have included some spreads from their 60’s and 70’s catalogs. Also, Nafeesah Allen wrote a great history of the chair for House Beautiful.

The chair is and will always be a classic item, however its popularity has waxed and waned over the years. At the moment, they are back in favor and people are able to recognize their domestic and alfresco versatility as well as their craftsmanship, design appeal and value. They fold down quickly and are easy to stash. You can take them glamping. Better still, you can take them to a friend's barbeque and stylishly set yourself apart from your peers who are slouched off-tilt, balancing atop a rickety plastic molded chair.

They come in a more than adequate range of colors, and if you see the canvas is noted as sunbrella, then you can safely let them live outside during the more hospitable months of the year.

Needless to say, the hardware store of my dreams would stock all of the colors!
